Beginning with this article, NEHS is pleased to recognize the winners of the NEHS scholarships for 2012-2013. The William C. Johnson Scholarship is the top award from the Society, given to the student submitting the best essay based on the Common Reader for the year, which was Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle

Georgia Dassler

Georgia Dassler is from Williamsburg, Virginia and will graduate from Jamestown High School in 2013. She is an active member of many school organizations in addition to NEHS, including the National Art Honor Society, of which she is Jamestown’s Chapter President, and Ascent Literary and Art Magazine, of which she is an editor. Georgia is committed to serving her community locally and worldwide through her school and church and recently had the opportunity to work with orphans and college students in Zimbabwe. She has also participated in ballet classes and performances since she was in elementary school.
Georgia will be attending the College of William and Mary this fall. She looks forward to taking advantage of global service and study abroad opportunities and hopes to study International Relations, Communications, and Education. She is interested in working for international education advocacy and awareness and in researching ways to improve education in less developed countries.
