National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has released another position statement focused on reading. In the December 3 newsletter, we highlighted the statement on “Independent Reading.” The latest research-based information is on the process of reading. It will be particularly helpful to reading specialists and English/language educators. From the overview,
” . . . readers don’t learn to read once and for all as much as they learn to read particular texts, in particular ways, for particular purposes, and in particular contexts (Gee, 1990; Wallace, 2003). The purpose of reading instruction, then, is to expand the range of ways and purposes for which students read.”
