NEHS is working with the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) to provide opportunities for Chapter Advisors to spend a part of their summer enriching their teaching practice through a focused exploration of the connections between the American art housed at the museum and the teaching of social studies, history, and English/language arts.
NEHS and SAAM received far more applications than expected and have been able to provide two dedicated $1,500 scholarships to NEHS Chapter Advisors from outside the Washington DC area to attend the Summer Institute at the museum. Scholarship winners also have their course fees waived.
We are pleased to announce that the winners of the 2024 NEHS-SAAM Summer Institute Scholarships are:
- Jessica Barnes—Auburn High School, Auburn, AL
- Jennifer Wilhite—Friona High School, Friona, TX
Phoebe Hilleman, the Education Specialist at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery who leads the Summer Institutes program said that the quality of applications submitted by NEHS Chapter Advisors was “very impressive” and revealed that, as a result, the following NEHS educators have also been accepted to the Summer Institute courses:
- Glorivette Anibarro, Colegio Católico Notre Dame, Puerto Rico
- Katie Burnett, Edgewood High School, CA
- Amy Cunningham, Round Rock High School, TX
- John Hall, Franklin Academy High School, FL
- Eileen Korey, Allentown High School, NJ
- Nicole Marcianti, Elizabeth High School at Frank J. Cicarell Academy, NJ
- Megan Scanlon, Northport High School, NY
- Stephanie Tatum, Harrison High School, GA
Only 60 educators from around the world are accepted to participate in the SAAM Summer Institutes, meaning that almost 20% of the total participants are NEHS Chapter Advisors—a fantastic result!
NEHS looks forward to continuing its partnership with SAAM and offering scholarships to Chapter Advisors for the 2025 SAAM Summer Institutes.
