The Advisory Council currently is considering the following books as we move toward the selection of the Common Reader(s) for the 2019-2020 Merit scholarships. In early February, all Advisors will receive a survey asking for a ranking of those titles still under consideration at that time as well as an invitation to make suggestions of additional titles, either fiction or non-fiction. Currently, we believe we will continue with two options for the Common Readers, allowing students to chose a text most meaningful to them. Here’s the current list, in no particular order:
- A Place for Us, by Fatima Farheen Mirza—on all the “best” lists of 2018
- Crime and Punishment, by Dostoevsky—a nod to the classics
- Emma, by Jane Austen—another classic
- Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward—2017 National Book Award
- The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez—2018 National Book Award
- The Poet X, by Elizabeth Acevedo—2018 National Book Award for Young Adults—novel in verse
- The Tattooist of Auschwitz, by Heather Morris
- There There, by Tommy Orange—On every “best of the year” list of 2018
- Thus Spoke Zarathustra, by Nietzsche—Advisor recommendation
- A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by Wallstonecraft—Advisor recommendation
- Washington Black, by Esi Edugyan—On every “best of the year” list of 2018
